Wintertime Tips
How to Conserve and Stay Warm
With cooler temperatures arriving, we know that cold winter months are just around the corner. With the dip in temperature, furnaces and heaters will be in high demand.
Here are some tips on how to conserve energy and stay warm all winter long:
- Purchase plastic window covers – up to 25 per cent of heat loss is through windows. Plastic window covers will help keep heat from escaping. Window covers can be purchased at most hardware stores.
- Caulk windows – put removable, temporary caulking on the inside of your windows. Selecting temporary caulking will allow you to remove in the spring.
- Keep window curtains open during the day – solar energy will heat your home.
- Lower your thermostat – lower the temperature on your thermostat when you’re not at home or overnight. Programmable thermostats are available and can be programmed to change the temperature automatically.
- Clean the furnace – have the ducts cleaned regularly and check for leaks. Leaky air ducts can cause distribution losses of up to 30 per cent.
